A traditional Dunkel brewed to bring a smile to any Monk. A perfect balance of roasted flavours and hints of caramel.
In the history of beer brewing, monks have a special place in heaven. They found the perfect triangulation of spirituality, nutrition and self-sufficiency to create a product that many still think of as ‘divine.’
Monks believed you must donate to the poor through the fruits of your labours and provide traveling pilgrims with food and drink. The Drink of choice being Beer.
Beer is ‘liquid bread.’ Monks knew this instinctively, even if they didn’t have precise knowledge of its many health benefits. Grain forms the backbone of beer, making it a source of safe, stored calories — about 150 per pint. A slice of bread was usually less than half of that.
Monks also didn’t know that beer, especially the dark brews they flavoured, were high in antioxidants that reduces cellular damage associated with aging. Beer also provides soluble fibre, reduces cholesterol and contains significant amounts of magnesium, selenium, potassium, phosphorous, biotin and a full range of B vitamins. Given the limited variety of fresh foods at this point in history, beer provided a healthy year found supplement.
The Certainly where innovators in Beer making. We hope to pay homage with our Dunkel to them.
